To Defeat a Demon

Three months after Lachlan slew the Emperor Allarun, the Eleion are on the verge of civil war. Torn between their hatred for the half-blood king and their duty to him, two of the clans renounce their loyalty in the hopes of destroying the alliance.

In the midst of negotiations, disaster strikes. A daring raid and kidnapping of Lachlan’s queen forces Lachlan to confront Allarun’s son, Vaurgar. Half demon and part god, Vaurgar has found a talisman so powerful that it can destroy Lachlan.

Lachlan agrees to Vaurgar’s terms in the hope of saving his queen and unborn son. As he sets out on a mission of rescue, a mysterious half-blooded girl offers to lead him to Vaurgar, for a price. And that price may cost him more than his life...

I am an avid reader, have been for decades. It's been at least two decades since I was in my "High Fantasy" phase but I think this author is pulling me back in!

I was truly satisfied with the story in the first book, I found it to be an excellent read for the genre. I had this on the kindle and was expecting another good read but honestly I was afraid the second book simile could not be as good as the first. Having just finished this book I can say my fears were unfounded. The first book had everything it needed to be a great read, this book has everything and more.

Everything here is just more of what we got in the first book. More character development, more backstory for the world, more of the characters that made the first book so enjoyable. And we also get great new characters here that more than hold there own with the established ones. Because I enjoyed the book so well I am going to nit pick a little here :)

I only found two things that stuck out and bothered me a bit... One was the antagonist. While written well in this book Vaurgar was none too bright in the first and it took a bit to accept that tuis fellow was really anything to worry about. IMHO he was not built up in the story up till this point to be more than his father's lackey. Perhaps some groundwork should have been laid in the first book.

The second thing was I felt the alliance broke up too quickly. These groups just assumed too quickly that there was no outside forces to fear and turned out the alliance. After a thousand years if being in limbo one would expect them to be cautious and not turning in allies until they were sure there was no more to fear from the minions of the death god.

Great read, goes by too quickly!

Runestone of Teiwas Swords of Destiny Book 2 eBook M H Bonham Reviews

Its a shame that the dialogue in this book and its predecessor is so poor and the character development is so shallow. This is because the plot had promise. In an effort I think to keep things moving the author forgot to add substance to the story. The end product is a painful read
I read this a couple of years back and read it again on my kindle. I like the fact that the story is surrounded by actual Gods who play their part in the story telling. It's not masterful, but then again it was a fun read.
I enjoyed the second book, possibly a bit more than the first. There was more character development and more of the backstory. The alliances came together and I felt they should have stayed together longer to build on this entire story.

We also get great new characters in this second book.

I will continue to read the works of M.H. Bonham.
I had never heard of M. H. Bonham before picking up these books. I enjoy reading different authors and finding little gems like this one. I picked this up with Prophecy of Swords and The King's Champion. Runestone of Teiwas and Prophecy of Swords are the Swords of Destiny series, with The King's Champion being a prequel. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend all 3 and I'll be checking out more of her stuff.
